Argentina achieved its independence from Spain in 1816. Buenos Aires is the capital and the largest city. Population: 40,300,000. It is the eighth-largest country in the world by land area and the largest among Spanish-speaking nations, though Mexico, Colombia and Spain are more populous. Language: Spanish (official). Religions: Christianity (predominantly Roman Catholic; also Protestant); also Islam, Judaism. Currency: Argentine peso. Argentina can be divided into four general regions: the North, the Pampas, Patagonia, and the Andes Mountains.
