Oman is a sultanate of the southeast Arabian Peninsula on the Gulf of Oman, an arm of the Arabian Sea, officially Sultanate of Oman, independent sultanate, c.82,000 sq mi (212,380 sq km).

It borders the United Arab Emirates on the northwest, Saudi Arabia on the west and Yemen on the southwest. Muscat is the capital. Population: 3,200,000. The inhabitants are mostly Arabs. About 75% are Ibadhi Muslims; the rest are mostly Sunni or Shiite Muslims or Hindus. Arabic is the official language; English, Baluchi, and Urdu are also spoken. Oman comprises a narrow coastal plain backed by hill ranges and an interior desert plateau. Muscat has been a port hub for many years, and today is the arrival point for everything from goods to cruise ships. In the Sharqiya Region you'll discover some of Oman's main attractions, like the beautiful beaches of Sur, the desert dunes of Sharqiya (Wahiba) Sands.
