Highlights of Syria
Syria is a country in Western Asia, It's bordered by Jordan to the east of Iraq, north of Turkey, Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea to the west and southwest of Israel. It is one of the largest state of the Middle East. It has many places recognized by UNESCO and listed on the World Heritage list as the ancient city Damascus, Aleppo and Bosra. It has an area of 185,180 km or 72,150 square miles and a population of 21,906,000 million people. Damascus is the capital and largest city with about 6 million people. About 90% of the population of Syria are Arabs and most of the faiths Islam. They use Armenian, Turkish, French and English laugues. Syria is a modern country with many place to visit such as the sensationally beautiful ruined city of Palmyra. Mighty Crusader castles, Damascene houses and sacred Umayyad mosques.

Syria officially has 14 governorates, but the following conceptual division makes more sense for travelers:

Northwestern Syria
Aleppo, one of the oldest cities in the world, as well as the Dead Cities, 700 abandoned settlements in the northwest of the country
Hauran
A volcanic plateau in the southwest of Syria, also includes the capital Damascus and its sphere of influence
Orontes Valley
The Orontes Valley, home to the towns of Hama and Homs
Syrian Coast and Mountains
Green and fertile, relatively Christian, somewhat liberal, and dominated by Phoenician and Crusader history
Syrian Desert
A vast empty desert with the oasis of Palmyra, as well the basin of the Euphrates, which is historically associated with the Assyrian and Babylonian history
